Extraordinary Compassion and Kindness Honored by EIRMC

Each year, EIRMC’s parent company, HCA Healthcare, sponsors the Frist Humanitarian Awards both at the local level and at the corporate level. Employees submit nominations in the employee, volunteer, and physician category.

The annual award recognizes those who have demonstrated “remarkable concern for the welfare and happiness of patients, have performed extraordinary acts of kindness, have been committed to community service and have a positive effect on others.” It is considered the company’s highest honor.

Nate Esplin, radiology technician at the Cancer Center; Dennis Alexander, volunteer chaplain; and Dr. Flint Packer, primary care physician, were recently awarded Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center’s Frist Humanitarian Awards for 2012.

Nate Esplin, Radiology Technician

Nate Esplin has traveled to Haiti twice to help rebuild an orphanage, and in the process, has given hope to those children. He has organized several events to raise funds for this special cause.

Nate recently donated a kidney to a childhood friend. When there was concern that Nate wasn’t a match, he committed to donate his kidney to a stranger if necessary, just to move his friend up on the recipient list. Luckily for Nate’s friend, they were a match!

Nate also makes EIRMC patients feels honored and special. On the last day of a patient’s treatment at the Cancer Center, they celebrate in style. The team turns on the disco ball and colored lights, lets loose with the industrial bubble blower and cranks up the music.

Reverend Dennis Alexander, Volunteer Chaplain

The second honoree is Reverend Dennis Alexander, a man who serves more hours here at EIRMC than many employees! Dennis works four shifts each work in the ER and is also our volunteer chaplain on Saturdays.

As a volunteer chaplain, Dennis offers spiritual support to people who are nervous, scared, and grieving. He prays with them, offers guidance, calms their fears and provides comfort.

However, Dennis is willing to help out in ways that are above and beyond his role as spiritual counselor. Dennis has been known to clean rooms, if that’s what’s needed. He’s given his personal cell to the ER nurses with instructions to call anytime – day or night – if they need help.

Outside of his service to EIRMC, Dennis is also the Director of Saints Alive (Saints Adult Ministry) at Calvary Baptist Church.

Dr. Flint Packer, Primary Care Physician

The third Frist Award honoree is Dr. Flint Packer, a primary care physician at Family First Medical Center. Dr. Packer has helped his neighbors with medical advice many times, even after hours and usually without compensation.

Dr. Packer finds time in his busy schedule to coach youth sports and is a Boy Scout leader. He also served six years as a volunteer board member here at EIRMC.

EIRMC donated funds to each honoree’s charity of choice, including Haitian Roots (Nate Esplin), Calvary Baptist Church Benevolence Fund (Dennis Alexander), and FreeMed (Dr. Packer).
